Last About The Leeward, About The Homeless Encampment, About Laundry, Wealth "Creation", Elvis Tribute Artist

A couple of things to clarify about yesterday's post. If you head to the Leeward beaches, and please by all means try them out remember a few things. Except for the area around Wai'anae town there are no facilities other than public bathrooms and some picnic tables. Some beaches have lifeguards, most don't so keep an eye on the kids. And take a picnic. These some of the most spectacular beaches, and easily accessible beaches anywhere in these islands. Most of the ones I passed had nobody on them. Having seen them it's easy to see why the classic From Here To Eternity passionate kiss in the sand and surf between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr was so plausible, there was quite likely nobody around.
About the homeless camp. There are likely hundreds of stories in that encampment. I would like to hear them, but it would be rude and disrespectful to enter uninvited. These are people who are the end of the road, literally. On the mainland they could pack up their cars, drive to another city or town and try their luck there. It can't be done here. The island is a closed circle. Have you ever tried to break a circle that won't let you go? The roads here only go two ways, to the left and to the right. And no matter which way you choose, you always end up at the same place you started.
The only help these people need is housing, and it's a hard fact priority that has to stand in line with fiscal reality.
Somebody sent me an e-mail (roadwurds@gmail.com) to ask about why I had to laundry when I have only been here a few days. In order to pack light I only bring four days of clothes. Most of the clothes are Tilley (shirts, socks, underwear) that I can do in the bathroom sink, along with the Cloudveil convertible pants. They dry overnight. However the hotel here has a convenient pay laundry on the fifth floor. Four washers and four dryers, three bucks for each, so I washed everything together.
A Private Function took over the patio by the Infinity Pool last night. It was some group of financial advisers from another Commonwealth country on their annual group recognition convention. They handed out awards for excellence, and performance, and salesmanship, and integrity. The kind of thing looks impressive when you walk in an office and take note of the certificates on the wall. And they did a strange handshake, hand over heart, Roman Centurion "my liege" kind of salute to each other. One person got an award for building up his "wealth creation business" in very short period of time and outperformed a sales goal kind of thing. The speech was typical thanking workmates and mentors, and then he thanked his wife. But she couldn't be here in Hawaii on this beautiful night as he accepted this award because she had to stay home with the kids. Seems to me the real wealth he created couldn't come to the party. But that's just me.
They did have some interesting post awards entertainment. A really credible Elvis "tribute" artist. I was glad it was one of the skinny Elvis guys. His backup dancers were good too.
I sat on the lanai listening and quite enjoying myself but it was getting late and I wanted to turn in. I fell asleep to him doing a creditable crooning of "Can't Help Falling In Love".

I didn't sleep well for the first time since arriving.
